Old Golfers Just Keep Putting Around

You've heard the saying "Old golfers never die" well, I am a firm believer. And here's why!

Several years ago, when my spouse and I retired, we moved from Las Vegas to a small town in Lincoln County Nevada ,to get away from the big city hustle and bustle. When I say small, I mean no fast food, only one gas station and a small market. A very rural area that is mostly farmers and retired seniors. Upon making this move I had decided that my weekend golf outings were a thing of the past. Boy! was I wrong!

Our nieghbor told us about the Lincoln County Golf Course, only twelve miles up the road, and that we should check it out. And so we did.

Upon arriving at the golf course the first thing we noticed was there was no club house. There were bath rooms in the form of two porta-a-potties. Once we unloaded our golf clubs from the car and headed down the path, we came upon a post with a coffee can attachment that had a sign saying" Donation $5.00" along with several homemade scorecards and pencils. Next to that was a metal box containing several pieces of artifical grass cut into squares of about the same size as sixteen inch floor tiles and a poster with the course rules. Each piece of turf had a rope handle attached to it, much like a purse handle, so a golfer could carry it with them.

To reach the men's first tee I had to climb several railroad tie steps, the ladies tea was on the lower area. Once there, I noticed that there was no grass but instead artifical turf and a sign that read " Hole # 1, 150 yards". I hit my first ball to the middle of the fairway. This is where the little piece of artifical grass comes in. There is no grass on the course, just hard desert and rocks that the sagebrush has been cleared from. You place your little piece of grass, that you are carrying with you, next to your golf ball and place your golf ball on that piece of grass. (No closer to the hole of course!) Now I hit my second shot onto the green only to watch it bounce compleatly off the other side. You see the green is also made of artifical grass. Once on the green you putt your ball as you would at any miniature golf arcade.

The same thing continues through the remaining eight golf holes ranging from 87 to 245 yards in length. Needless to say, we didn't score very well.

Come to find out this entire golf course was designed, built, and maintained by retired seniors who volunteer their time and labor. Perhaps, they are "The real gold in the Nevada desert." They even have their own league, tournaments, and membership.

In conclusion, if you ever get to Lincoln County Nevada, bring your golf clubs, and lots of balls you don't mind losing. I promise you a round of golf you will never forget.

Boy, what can you say about about a retired ol' fella that loves to play golf. Do what I am doing, enjoy your retirement, do the things you like, move away from the rat race and love the people around you. read our blog at http://becomebettergolfers.blogspot.com/
