All there is to know about basketball

Undoubtedly, basketball is one of the most popular games all around the world and although it is played with only a ball and a hoop, it is though. This article is about a brief history of this sport and what rules should one follow for a correct game.

The history of basketball

It all begins with Jim Naismith in the year of 1891 when this sport was played for the first time indoors at the YMCA in Massachusetts. For that first time, the game was played with a ball and two peach baskets as goals. In the next phase, the game spread to colleges where the first leagues were formed. As it gained so much popularity, it was rapidly played at a professional level, earning in 1936 the title of an Olympic sport. This represents the foundation of NBA (National Basketball Association), one of the most renowned and popular sports league in the entire world.

Among the most resounding names in basketball I can list Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robinson and of course, the greatest player of all times, Michael Jordan. They contributed greatly to this sport, making it the most famous game.

The most popular game

One of the reasons for which basketball is the most famous game is that most people enjoy playing it. This is the sort of sport that can be easily played, shooting and dribbling can easily be practised and each player gets part of the action. It usually involves five players within a team, but it is also fun to play one-on-one, nevertheless a lot of fun.

Secondly, this game is quite enjoyable to watch. The professional players easily move around the court at high speed, making it interesting and exciting, especially when there are many goals scored. And of course, this game can be played in all weathers, be it summer or winter (in an indoor court). Some play it outside during the cold season, as long as the ground is cleared to avoid slipping, there aren't any inconveniences.

The rules are easy to understand and follow

There are a few rules to keep in mind when playing basketball, a player must bounce or dribble the ball using one hand and if both hands touch at any time the ball, then the player can only take one more step and ultimately shoot or pass the ball. Secondly, a player can only dribble once, if one stops and then resumes, it is considered as a double-dribbling violation and he has to cease the ball to the other team.

Thirdly, the ball must always stay in bounds, if one teams loses the ball out of bounds, it is given to the other team. The fourth rule is again about dribbling, when doing so the hand must be placed on top of the ball and if it reaches the bottom side, it is called carrying the ball and it is ceased to the other team. The last rules is about the backcourt violation, once a team has crossed the line to the opponent's half of the court, they can't pass it back.

Overall, this game is an interesting one which is played all around the world.
