Today, Germany Behaved Like Arsenal FC

Germany had it grinding. The team had had an unbeaten run, they had thrown in some solid performances, the German machines - big, strong, reliable. And then, it happened.

Enter team Italia, they had started off with shaky, lacklustre performances at the beginning of the competition. The team lacked the Italian symphony of old; Pirlo was a one man ball-distribution machine, Cassano and Balotelli seemed to head in the usual direction most superstar strikers are wont to follow.

If you're about to ask what I mean by the above statement, well, most superstar strikers have a kind of "liver"/"brain co-ordination" failure when they decide to play for their national teams. Maybe it's the pressure that comes with playing for their country, I'll never know. To stay abreast of this issue, as I want to move on to the meat of this post, Google the national performances of Lionel Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney, Cassano...should I go on?

Now, where was I? Yes, as Arsenal fans around the world watched the match between Italia and Germany, we had a sense of deja vu; this had happened before, sometime not too long ago. Germany had failed when everyone had expected them to win and give football fans the final they had been waiting for - Spain vs Germany.

It sounded all too familiar, Arsenal vs QPR (Queens Park Rangers), Arsenal vs Fulham, Arsenal vs Swansea...the list goes on. Small, weak teams we were expected to beat but like Germany, we failed when a win was needed most.

No offence to Italia, it's not that I think that they are a small weak team but considering the hype and noise surrounding this game, they were considered the lesser team, the team less likely to win.

Maybe like Arsenal, Germany had become relaxed; maybe like Arsenal the German team had come to take things for granted, maybe like Arsenal they had forgotten to put up a worthwhile fight inevery match, no matter how big or small or "oil rich" the team. I think they had forgotten.

I'm not German, neither is my mother but I can empathise with them, I know how it feels to have your hopes smashed, dashed and stamped upon. Rest assured the Germans will weep tonight, they are a very proud people and hate to lose; they will definitely weep tonight.
