Wilderness Areas vs. Public Lands: Understanding Multiple-Use Management

A wilderness area is a federally protected area of land designated by the United States Congress that retains its primeval character and influence, without permanent improvements or human habitation. It is administered by one of the land management agencies, the United States Forest Service, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or the Bureau of Land Management, in such a manner as to preserve their wilderness character.

In contrast, public land using multiple-use management allows for various and often competing uses such as recreation, grazing, mineral exploration and extraction, logging, land development, water usage, hunting, off-road vehicle use, or the protection of natural or cultural resources. As opposed to designated wilderness areas' focus on conservation as the chief or only permitted use, multiple-use public lands balance and prioritize competing social, economic, or ecological objectives.
