Is a runner out at first if he turns left to return

Question
A batter bunts the ball.  While in the process of running to first base, the catcher throws the ball to first base but hits the batter in the back.  The ball is deflected which pulls the first baseman off of the base.  The batter/runner reaches first base safely.  The runner then turns to his left to return to first base after over running the base.  The first baseman recovers the ball and tags the runner.  The runner never made any attempt to advance to second base.  The runner is called out by the umpire.  Is this call correct - the runner is out because he turned left?  The game is a Little League game - Seniors Division - 16 and Under.

Answer
Greg,

The major league rules are very clear.  If the runner makes no attempt to advance, then they can not be put out - regardless of the direction that they turn after overrunning first.

I don't have a copy of the little league rules, but I'd bet they say the same thing.

Hope this helps!
