Win vs Save

Question
A game is 0-0 going into the top of the tenth inning. Your team bats the top of the 10th, and scores a 3 run home run. Manager immediately warms up the teams closer. The closer comes in and shuts down the opposing team in the bottom of the 10th. Your team wins 3-0.

Does the closer get a win or a save?, and why?

Answer
Beatrix,

In this situation the Closer would be credited with a save, and the win would go to the pitcher who threw in the ninth inning.

A win is granted to the last pitcher to throw before the go ahead runs are scored, not the next pitcher. Since your closer would have thrown after the go ahead runs, he would only be given a save.

Thank you for your question,
Sean
