Better Speed

Question
I am 12 years old and play 3rd base. I have quick hands but am very slow. What are some drills i can do at home to bring my speed up and make me stronger?

Thanks,
Brendan

Answer
Brendan,

Luckily, 3rd base doesn't require someone who can run ultra fast.

This sounds kind of dumb, but the best way to be better at something is to practice.  Run sprints.  Practice running home to second and first to third.  Run 100 yard dashes.  Don't go anywhere slowly or at half pace.  Run full out all the time.  That should help speed you up somewhat.  Unfortunately genetics play a roll, so you'll never be Tyson Gay, but practicing will make you faster.

One way to stay motivated.  Mark off a 60 yard course and run it as fast as you can with someone timing you.  After running sprints for a three weeks, run the course again.  Then check again after three more weeks.  You should see improvement.

Hope this helps!
