Hit or No Hit?

Question
If the batter hits a fair ball, run to the base, turns to go to second, runs back to first, called safe by the umpire, then called out when tagged while stepping off the base... is this ruled a hit?

Answer
Terry,

Yes, it counts as a hit because he reached 1st base safely (he was tagged out advancing to 2nd, even though he returned to 1st base).

I hope this has answered your question.  Should you have anymore, please don't hesitate to ask!
