Batted ball hitting runner

Question
I just saw a game in where a batted ball hit the first base runner on his way to
second. i thought the proper call was a dead ball, runner is out and batter gets
first base. what ended up happening was it hit the runner and the ball was still
live and the batter ended up getting out turning a double play. i just wanted
some clarification.

If the umpire declared that no fielder had a chance at making a play then no dead ball would be called. If a fielder had a chance at making the play on the ball then a dead ball should have been called.

A runner getting hit with a batted ball doesn't always mean that he is out.
