Backcourt Violation (Over-and-Back) Explained - Basketball Rules

Question
Situation: Team-A on offense and takes a shot, long rebound to free-throw line where it hits another Team-A player in the head and deflects into 'backcourt'.  Yet another Team-A player retrieves the ball in backcourt without any member from Team-B touching the ball.  Is this a backcourt (over-and-back) violation.  Or is this considered a loose-ball with no team control therefore, not a violation!

Sincere thanks!
Loren

Answer
HI Loren,

It is a back court violation. The reason is that Team A is considered to have possession of the ball even during a "lose ball" situation, until Team B retrieves the ball and gains possession themselves. so a missed shot attempt that gets deflected into the backcourt by a member of that same offensive team with out the defense touching it in any way is a back Court violation. I hope that helps.
