2-3 Zone defense

Question
I am on my high school junior basketball team and player the forward position. I am starting to get frustrated offensively with the d because I can't really cant much going. I have a jump shot but I often don't like using it that much in games but my post up is great. So can you give me any tips to breaking the zone for a forward?

Answer
Hi Shawn,

The best way to beat any zone is to score in transition and beat the defense down the court. have your team mates pass the ball around a lot, because the defense must switch and follow the ball. Set picks, and roll. If your playing the low post, then the Zone Defense really shouldn't matter too much unless you get double teamed. Why not continue to develop your outside shot? If your post move is great, then you need to work on your shot, and have another tool in your arsenal. your going to encounter a Zone defense a lot, especially in high school. use that post move as much as possible, especially if your big and your size creates a miss match. If your the dominant player on your team, your coach should be creating plays around you. Just like pick and roll moves between John Stockton and Carl Malone in the old Utah Jazz days.
