Tight end

Question
Hi, i will be playing football for the first time in 9 grade. I am about 6 feet four and weigh 215 pounds and have been told to play foootball because of my great hands. You probably think that i should play lineman or something but i run the 40 in 4.72 seconds. I also play basketball and soccer(golie). I can bench around 125 and squat 185 for additional info. I was just wondering if this is the right position, and if it is can u please tell me some tips for the tight end position.

Answer
You have excellent height and good speed for your age.  Your bench and squat are about right for your age.  I could only bench 95 pounds my first year in high school and was benching just under 400 pounds in college.  My squat went from about 275 to 700 pounds.  I was not blessed with speed (6.0 in the 40), but brought that down to 5.3 seconds while going from 195 pounds to 305 pounds.

The reason I tell you about bettering my lifts and speed is because I believe you can do the same.  If you played for me I would try you out at Tight End and Defensive End.  With the proper work ethic you could get bigger, stronger and faster.  With the right mind set you could put yourself in line to get noticed by colleges.  You could easily get your weight to around 250 pounds and lower your 40 yard time to under 4.6.

The main thing I will tell you is that it is up to you.  What do you want?  How hard are you willing to work?  You can coast along and just have fun and be a middle of the road player, or you can work your rear off and be the best you can be.

Good luck
