Peewee player - hockey stick flex

Question
My son uses a one-piece CCM Vector VSE OPS orange stick.  It is labeled 20kp Junior Flex 50.

His coach was working with him one-on-one last night on one-timers and suggested he had "too much flex" in his stick.  He is about 90lbs with an OK wrist shot, and no slap shot...second year Peewee.  Defenseman.  Not much upper body strength yet...built like a toothpick.

Any suggestions on what to look for in a stick?  Back to wood?

Answer
Hi Stu...

Coach must have seen a little "too much" flex from your son's shots.   So this could be "something" if your son is losing accuracy and/or power.   I believe the next flex up is in the 70's - or may even be an intermediate stick...

Most definitely going to wood might ease some of these issues - though it may prove to feel quite a bit heavier...  unless you find one of the light brands (if they are still available).  Go to pro shop with him and have him "feel and flex" different sticks in the price range you are willing to pay...

BOTTOM line to me is going to be your SON'S impression...  if he likes his stick and has FUN - that's the most important part at this stage.   He'll have plenty of time to be looking at different stick, lies, flexes, etc., etc., later on...

Hope this helps!

Thanks and good luck with the puck!
