age limits in rugby

Question
I am a 41 year old physiotherapist by profession. I look after myself reasonably well, have completed a few triathlons over the years. Recently, I have really got into rugby and am writing to ask wether I am being totally unrealistic in thinking that with may be a decent training/strength programme I could may be get a few games of lower level rugby in Essex, England. Unfortunately, I am a total beginner with regard to rules (prob know 50%) and tactics. I am 5.10 and 12.5 stone and still pretty quick on my feet with v good hand/eye. What do you think ?

Many thanks and kind regards

Answer
Hi Gary,

here is no age limit but you might talk to a few different clubs to see if they have team that are deicated to veteran players. Some clubs have teams that focus on guys who just want a run and don't need to kill each other. Also, I do not know your weight but you may also ask about weight restricted teams. The under 85 division is big in New Zealand and I think it can be found in the UK.

The big thing is to stand up for yourself. Do not get suckered into any macho rubbish, if a team or club seams like a bunch of block heads that could make learning the game a chore then move on. Tell them straight that you know nothing and want to larn the game and have fun, have a few beers and a good time.

I can suggest a good book "Rugby for Dummies" it is geared towards the USA market but is a good starter for the game at large.

Have fun and welcome to rugby.
