Question
hey, im currently a versatile prop who covers either loose or tight depending on how my other prop is finding it but im starting to find prop extremly boring. i used to enjoy the one on one and being thick in it but to be honest it just not the same feeling anymore.

im 5'10 and around 15 stone 1max rep on bench is 125kg
curling 10x20kg atm
and kinda fast (nothing special but i out keep up with most back rowers) since first starting two years ago ive won two trophies first was most improved followed by big hit. i love tackling and i love scoring tries (score many in practise but dont get given the chance to in matches)and im getting really hungry just to get the ball, score tries make awe inspiring handoffs and cringing tackles. my question also prepares me for first team as im deamed worthy to play for them now. my question is...

...what position would cope with my aims? how do i get there? (what training, do i go straight to speed and get a lbf% or do i get a lbf% first and then continue with waits?)how would i convince my coach im ready for that position.

my question isn't explained well, basically i need a complete 101 guide for someone willing to put in 200% effort on and off training, i love rugby with everything i have and since theres a lot going round in my head...gets hard to explain myself

Answer
Hi Gazz,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I think your in the right position at the moment. Dont forget that Props are the most sought after players internationally and you can make a good living and career from that position.

If you can keep up with the back rowers, thats great so you need to maybe work on your "off the mark" speed. Maybe talk to a sprint coach to work out a program for you or just time yourself over 50 & 100 metres. Go for leg weights for speed and maybe go lighter on the body weights so you dont add more weight to your 125kg frame.

As for the coach, maybe start approaching training as if it is a game and start playing yourself into your position, start trying to out play and out play the other guys in your positon during training. Sometimes during our training runs...it would be worse than an actual game. Training is the place to stamp your mark on ypur team, try to be faster and more aggresive then anyone else who is trying out for the same position. That way the coach will have no choice but to put you in.

Hope that helps
