Hit vs Defensive Indifference

Question
Tom
If a batter bunts or hits a ground ball and the fielder tries to make a play at the lead runner without success, can the batter be credited with a hit?  Two scenarios.  (1) Runner at 1B, no outs, ball hit sharply up the middle on the SS side of 2B.  SS makes great play and flips the ball to 2B but not in time to get the force out.  (2)  Runner at 3B no outs, squeeze play executed perfectly with a push bunt past 3B who is charging.  Pitcher has to field the ball while turning her back to the plate.  Pitcher throws home but not in time to get the lead runner.  In either of these situations, is the batter credited with a hit or defensive indifference (0 for 1)?

Answer
1.  Could be a hit, could be a fielder's choice.  If F6 could have put the runner out at first, fielder's choice, if not, hit.  When in doubt, score a hit.

2.  Credit a hit here.  If there was an error on the the play you would score it a sacrifice.
