Double base (orange) part

Question
No runners on. Ground ball to first base, defensive player tries to field the ball, but at the attempt the ball is touched in fair ball area and recochets off her glove and goes foul to the orange side of the base. Defenxive player picks up the ball and touches the orange part of the base.  Is the runner out? Would this be connsider the same as if  a routine throw from the infield and throw carried the first baseman off to the orange part of the base, then the runner can use the white portion of the base and the defence can use the orange.  League-Pony / Nfhs.

Answer
Hi Rene,

Thank you for your question.  In your scenario, yes, the batter/runner is out.  When the defensive player retrieves the fair ball in foul territory she is permitted to touch either bag, and the batter/runner is permitted to touch either bag.  It is the same set of circumstances as a routine or non-routine!) throw that pulls the defensive player into foul territory.

Here is the rule right out of the 2011 NFHS Softball Rules Book: 8-10-2-a: The defense and the batter-runner may use either the white or colored portion on any force out attempt from the foul side of first base.
