MLB Rule: Ball Blocked by Catcher - Runner's Advancement

Question
Runner on 2nd base . Ball is pitched to batter.Ball hits catchers shin guard goes into dugout out of play . Umpire awards runner home plate . States runner was stealing 3rd and had 3rd base when ball hit catcher and goes out of play .Umpire states ball was blocked out of play thus awarding extra base for home.I am thinking over  thrown from infielder max 1 base

Answer
Eddie,

After the ball is put in play by the offense, a ball that is thrown out of play by the defense regardless of the defensive player that made the error is a two base award for the runners.  The award is based where the runners are at the TIME OF THE THROW, not when it leaves the field of play.

On a pitched ball that goes out of play the award is one base from the base the runner was occupying at the time of the pitch.

The umpires don't get to have an opinion on this one, they just make the call.

Tom
