Softball Foul Tip vs. Foul Ball: Understanding the Rules
Question
Mens slow pitch softball league, following ASA rules.
The batter swings at the ball and "ticks" it; the catcher catches the ball. We had some discussion as to whether or not this was considered a strike or a caught ball.
I have always thought the rule was, it had to go over the batters head to be considered a fly ball.
Answer
Hi Eric,
Height of the ball doesn't matter if the ball is a foul "tip" or a foul "ball"
a foul "tip" goes sharply and directly from the bat to the catcher's glove and is legally caught. That is only an out on a 3rd strike. Foul tips happen occasionally in SP but are not real common.
A foul "ball" does not go sharply and directly and is an out if legally caught by the catcher.
