ASA ejection rule

Question
QUESTION: 1 out runner on first.  Batter hits ground ball to short stop who throws ball to 2nd baseman to start the double play.  The runner advancing to second does not slide, however they stay in the baseline and do not make contact with the second baseman.

The second baseman does do a pump throw because of the runner not moving out of the way, but does not get the throw off.   What do I rule?  Thanks again for your time and sharing your knowledge on this play.

ANSWER: Hi Zach,

Rule, nothing, you've got no interference here.  The runner is not required to slide, nor can they disappear.

QUESTION: One more question.   bases loaded 1 out fielder hits line drive directly to 2nd baseman who catches the ball.   While all runners are retreating, the 2nd baseman attempts to double up the runner on first but overthrows the ball to dead ball area.  Dead ball is called.   I advance all runners 2 bases, despite the fact that they were retreating to the previous base when the ball was thrown.   ASA rules.  Thanks again.

ANSWER: Hi Zach,

always glad to help a young umpire.....position of the runners is based on the last base touched, direction of the runners in ASA is NOT a consideration, so it is always 2 bases from the last base touched,  your ruling is correct, defense got an out, R1 and R2 awarded home and R3 to 3rd.

The mechanic is "DEAD BALL" give the runners time to re-touch the base and then make the award "R1 home" etc.  If there is no retouch, then honor an appeal from the defense if 1 is made.

QUESTION: As I understand the ejection rule.  If a person is ejected  for unsportsmanlike conduct, arguing, or using a non-approved bat.   If the team only has 10 players in the lineup and field.  They must find a replacement to have the game continue and not forfeit.  Also if they are using the (EP) slowpitch, they must find a replacement to that (EP) place in the batting order and can't skip or take an out.   ASA rules again.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Zach,

thanks for the kind evals.

Yes an ejection is different from a disqualification that would allow you to play shorthanded and take an out in that bp.

Anytime you have an ejection you must have a legal sub to replace that player or the game is over.

If you use an EP you must continue to use the position throughout the game or if they can't play due to injury, disqualification etc. and have no legal sub you must take an out in that bp because you are playing shorthanded even though you do have 10 batting and fielding.  If the EP is ejected, legal sub or game is over same as w/ any ejection.
