Answer Dead ball when the ball hits the batter. Batter awarded first base. It is common misconception that the batter is not awarded first when the ball hits the ground prior to hitting the batter.
The only exception to this would be a dead ball strike if for some reason the batter takes a swing at the ball prior to the ball hitting the batter.
