ASA ruling on overthow and missing a base

Question
Dear Dr. Mark,

The question I have comes from an answer you gave a while back with an additional circumstance.

Your answer, "Let's put this out there as an example of the overthrow award...R1 at 1st, long fly ball and R1 is running at the crack.  He touches 2nd and heads to 3rd when the ball is caught and now thrown (the outfielder has a rocket)to 1st.  R1 realizes he left early and heads back to 1st, but the ball goes over f3 head and is thrown out of play.  The award is home because the last base touched at the time of the throw was 2nd (he was between 2nd and 3rd).  R1 must of course re-touch 1st and then take the award or they would be out on appeal.

Now what if R1 on the way back to re-touch 1B misses touching 2B, cutting the corner running back to 1B?  On his way back to home he properly touches 2B, 3B, and home.  If the defense appeals properly, is he now out?  What if there is no appeal from the defense, and they pitch to the next batter?  Does the play stand in which R1 is awarded home?

Answer
Hi Todd,

R1 must re-touch the bases in reverse order and he would be out on appeal for missing 2nd on the way back to 1st.

No appeal and a pitch...too bad...too late, an appeal must be made before the next pitch, legal or illegal.  so the answer is yes, play stands
