Passed Ball vs. Wild Pitch: When is it an Error in Baseball?

Question
Is a passed ball considered an error if a runner advances and/or scores?  Is a wild pitch considered an error in the same situation?

Answer
Scott,

An error can only be charged after the ball is put in play after the pitch.  There is never an error charged to the catcher while receiving a pitch.  Miscues on the pitch are either charged to the catcher as a passed ball or on the pitcher with a wild pitch.

One note for the catcher, it is only considered a passed ball if the catcher could have caught the ball with ordinary effort.  All other pitches that get by the catcher that allow a runner to advance are wild pitches.  It is always a wild pitch if the ball hits the ground prior to getting the catcher if the catcher can't stop it and a runner advances.
