Softball Youth Coach Pitch Play Analysis: Close Call & Umpire Decision

we were in a game lastnight runners on 1st and 2nd batter hit the ball the ball was hit and fielded then throwed to 1st wich the runner was safe the girl that was on second that had to advance to third rounded 3rd toward home to try to score the 1st baseman ran with the ball toward the girl trying to score and met her right before the home plate as she made the tag the umpire had called the runner out at the same time the ball fell from the first basemans glove but the umpire would not change her call and ther was no crash between the players so was she safe or out?

I didn't see the play, obviously but...

If a defensive player loses control of the ball during a tag play the runner would not be out.

A standard most umpires use, does the player have control of the ball during the tag AND was there a voluntary release of the ball after the tag.
