In field fly rule Sliding into home.

Question
Please explain this rule, our umpire uses this very often.

Is there a rule that you have to attempt to slide if the play is at home?
Can you as a catcher, stand on the base ?

What about if the ball is popped up to 2nd, not caught, Runner coming home, already running to home thinks that it might be caught, so she turns around and runs back toward third, then turns back and runs to home?   The ball is thrown to home and over thrown.  What happens?  It was called jogging.

Answer
Hi Cynthia,

Unless you have local rules to the contrary in ASA there is no must slide rule.  If they use it often you may have a must-slide rule that affects your local league.  Your coach should know the local rules, if any.

If a runner is coming home you cannot block the base without having control of the ball.  If you do you are quilty of obstruction.

Jogging???? never heard of it, know of no rule on it.    This runner is legally running the bases and is safe at home.
