First base skills

Question
When a right-handed firstbaseman, goes back to the bag after a pitch to hold the runner on, or attempting to tag the runner out, what is the proper method for going back to the bag? #1 Turn into the firstbase line, and receiving the ball, with the glovehand turning into the runner? #2 Or, does she turn into the field side, run towards the bag and position herself to receive the throw? #1 seems quicker, but you are turning your back to the runner, and are totally dependent on your team to tell you the runner is stealing.

Answer
Hello Randy,

I've always taught to turn back toward the first base line for the reason you mentioned, it's faster and more natural. I don't rely of my firstbaseman to tell the catcher a runner is stealing.  She will be playing in front of the bag, and often is unaware so I have my second baseman yell instead.  I also like to sneak my second baseman in behind the runner for a pick off attempt especially if there is a likely sacrifice situation.  Obviously you'd need a signal for this so the first baseman knows not to interfere with the throw.  I hope this was helpful and please let me know if you have any other questions.
