dropped third strike ruling

Question
Girl on 3rd, two outs and the catcher drops the third strike. While the catcher is bobbling the ball the runner from third gets to home. After that the catcher tags the batter because she didn't run making the third out. The umpire scored the run stating it was a timing play. I have asked multiple umpires about this call and most agreed with the call. Please clarify because I do not believe it was a correct call.

Thanks,

Jim

Answer
Hello Jim

I agree with you, this is not a timing play. The runner that was on 3rd could not score because the third out was a result of the batter-runner being put out before reaching first base.

The batter becomes a batter-runner with liability to be put
out-->
When with two outs or fewer than two outs and first base is unoccupied, the catcher fails to catch a third strike before the ball touches the ground.

Rule 5, Section 5 B 1 states, in part, "No runs shall score" if the third out of the inning is a result of: A batter-runner being called out prior to reaching first base.
