Base Running Appeals: Understanding Missed Bases & Runner Outs in ASA Baseball
Question
Two runners cross homeplate -- the first runner misses the plate and the 2nd runner touches the plate -- is it the umpires job to call the runners out or must the defensive team make an appeal about the missed base ? And, is the 2nd runner out if the first one is appealed and called out ?
Answer
Hi Rhonda,
In ASA play the missed base must be appealed by the defense.
The second runner would not be out simply because the preceding runner was. If it was a force play at home AND the 3rd out of the inning the run would not score, otherwise it would.
