Baseball Fair/Foul Ball Rule: Ball Touched in Foul Territory
Question
If a ball is hit slowly down the first base line and bounces twice in play and the fielder touches ball in flight and in foul grounds, is the ball fair and/or foul?
Answer
HI Daniel,
If the ball is between the plate and a base the question is "where is the ball" when it is touched?
If the ball is in fair territory when it is touched it is a fair ball.
Likewise if the ball is in foul territory when it is touched it is a foul ball.
The fair or foul postion of the defensive player has no meaning in determining if the ball is fair or foul.
