Umpire Ruling: Walk Called After Attempted Double Play - NSA/IHSAA Rules
Question
12-U fastpitch tournament. NSA rules. However, umpire says following call is listed in IHSAA (Indiana High School) rulebook. Please include where I can find ruling if possible.
Runner on third. Batter is walked. Catcher throws to first base; runner attempts to score and first baseman throws home. Homeplate upmpire rules there was no play to be made on the batter, and awards a ball to next batter up.
Answer
Hi Donna,
I'm not an NSA or IHSAA umpire
Under ASA it would not apply when the batter becomes a batter-runner or there are runners on base.
Again I am not a NSA or IHSAA umpire but I checked and NSA's rule appears to be almost the same as ASA. NFHS states it must be to make a play on a runner. So it probably is listed in IHSAA and under those rules the correct call.
