Daughter cut from jv volleyball

Question
Hello.
My daughter played jv in her freshman year and played club for two years.  She attended camps over the summer and open gym sessions at her hs.  She did not get on jv this year. Her coach chose 9 freshmen and four returning sophomores.  Coach told my daughter that she had too many freshmen, she did not know where to play my daughter 5'2 although she had played back row defense and setter.  Then she advised her to play club.  And said that she could change her mind.  Ok where do we go from here?  College summer camp was pleased with her playing and said they will put her on recruitment list.  We are committed to getting my daughter private coaching and speed and agility sessions to prepare for club.  Should she tryout next year for varsity or give up playing hs volleyball and stick with club and camps?

Answer
Hello Eva and welcome to www.AllExperts.com

My name is Coach Tovar

To make sure that all my readers young and old can understand some of my comments, I have chosen to use simple vocabulary words and interpret the rule for this sole purpose.

We'll Eva I know it's a sensitive issue whenever we as "people who give advice" have to tell something negative to great parents who only want the best for their child.

It is sometimes hard because as parents we always want a solution within the problem and not outside of the problem.

It seems that her coach was trying to be somewhat sensitive to you and your daughter's feeling.

I would go where your daughter has a better chance of participation and continue her love of volleyball. High school volleyball is more competitive in that you have to earn your spot based on other skill levels other than talent. These other "skills" I am talking about is having the right height for the position, consistency, great block and spike approach.

Because of your daughters?height, she is limited to only two positions where one of these positions (setter position) may require her to also block in the front row if she is setting from there.

"New" talent comes in every year at the beginning of each season and sometimes the right players are noticed regardless of the grade level other experienced players used to have.

I would again just let your daughter play wherever she might have a better chance of playing.

"Should she tryout next year for varsity or give up playing hs volleyball and stick with club and camps?"
If she tries out next year and she gets the same results and does not make the team then just make sure you support her and not set her up or build her up for something that she might not be ready for.

Because most players pay for club teams then they might play them just a little more regardless of their talent or height.

Most girls who do play volleyball and have a starting position as a Libero can be 5'2" but is less likely that they would play as a setter in the older years of high school as in JV or varsity.

Never give your daughter the "giving up" choice as a part of an option because she can always play in any type of open club team regardless of her skill level and or height up to the age of 70.

Be open minded to the coaches and try to read from their advice. He or she might be telling you that your daughter is not good enough for this team or future teams in other ways and coaches are not in the business of just plain out saying things in that way. As parents we should not require coaches to tell us straight out that our daughters are not good enough.

I believe this is what her coach was telling you and your daughter.

I hope this answers your question.
