cheers during opponents serves

Question
My 7th grade daughter's school team played an equally matched neighboring school.  The games were very close, but I noticed that every time our servers tossed the ball up, the opposing team yelled during the serve.  The ref didn't indicate that this was a foul, but it seems very unsportsmanlike.  Is it a legal strategy to yell during the serve?

Answer
Hello Bob and welcome to www.AllExperts.com

My name is Coach Tovar

To make sure that all my readers young and old can understand some of my comments, I have chosen to use simple vocabulary words and interpret the rule for this sole purpose.

This is something that has had a lot of attention, yet it is a very sensitive matter in sports. There are many professional organizations that have rule standards for their teams  but what about the opposing teams? There are no special rules for making noise during a "concentration moment". You can only return the favor.

The best thing you can do to show sportsmanship is to bring this up to the coach. It would be the responsibility of the coach to ask the ref to address the audience. The coach in this case cannot say anything about it.

If the ref asks the audience not make any noise during a serve then the ref must also ask this from the opposing team. Unfortunately someone on either side will break this rule. As a proud parent there is nothing you can say to another parent or their kids to stop them from making noise during a serve. You can only tell them of their unsportsmanlike behavior. They are not wrong.

Basically there is nothing you can do. As you know in football, the 12th man is considered to be the crowd and the loud noise they make to give their home team and advantage. I know it would be heart breaking to loose a game because of the noise made in a game. It is the responsibility of the coach to teach their players concentration strategies. Keep this in mind, noise is part of sports. Players will loose more concentration when they hear their own parent's constant yelling then when they hear opposing non meaningful noise.
