Middle schooler has torn thumb ligament

Question
I play volleyball for our travel team NVVA 13 and i tore a ligiment in my thumb and i was in a cast for five weeks. when i got out of the cast my thumb was perfectly fine. i can start playin in about a week. and im going to a tournament called captial classic and i really want to play and not be in much pain. so i was wondering if you know a good way to tape my thumb. i have one of those stablizers but it hurts.

thanks

Answer
Hey Monica!

This is so cool to hear from you!  My 15's team will be there as well!!  I don't know when we play, but maybe we'll run into each other.  I coach for the New River Valley 15 National.

You may not have had time to read about me.  I'm not an athletic trainer.  :(   My advice is to see if a PE/gym teacher at your school can show you.  Or maybe you go to one of those awesome schools that has an athletic trainer.  If your middle school doesn't have one, then the high school probably does!  And I'm sure the athletic trainer there will show you how to tape it.  Have your parents call the high school, ask for the athletic trainer, and when your parents tell the trainer your situation, I'm sure the trainer will make an appointment to see you.

There are also athletic trainers at that Capitol Hill tournament!  So, if you want a professional to tape your thumb (and not your mom or dad or you), just get there about 30 minutes before your coach requires you to be there, and have them tape it.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful; but, again, I'm not an athletic trainer.

I hope your team does GREAT in DC!  Hope to meet you there.
Coach Houser
