thanks for replying so fast. uhh i don't know what a tricep curl or what a forearm curl is. or maybe i do but i don't know that's what it's called. anyway that's not the point.i wanted to ask u if u knew stuff about working out. and if u do i got some questions:
a) i'm skinny and i wanna gain muscle. should i be taking a weight that i can manage and do 3 sets of, say 8 reps, or should i take a heavy weight and do 3 sets of like 3-4? which one should give me more results?
b) do my biceps do anything in spiking?
c) usually what i do while working out is warm up, work on torso, play ball, work on arms, play ball. for example, if i'm working on chest, i warm up, work on chest, play ball, work on triceps, and play ball. is that advisable?
d) i wanna start training underwater too. like u know those martial arts where they train underwater and their muscles move faster because it's used to the pressure of the water? i figured that it should work for my arm swing too. what do u think of that?
thanks a lot. this means a lot to me.

hey...thanks for the info
could u also tell me the muscles involved when spiking? as in how to hit harder, stuff like that. cause right now i can jump, but i can't hit hard enough. i know for placement u don't need strength, but once in a while, i would like to hit hard.
 thanks
ps : sorry if i sound rude but i don't know any other way of expressing myself. no offense.

can u tell me what r the major muscles involved when spiking the ball? i'd like to work on them a lot.

Tai,

Sorry you had to wait...........I was on vacation for the last week.

The first thing you have to inprove (work on) are your legs.  The higher you jump the more you can do at the net.  Work on your calves and do a lot of pylometric exercises.  Then work on your shoulders, most volleyball injuries to the upper body come in the shoulder girdle.  So the stronger your shoulders the less likely you will have an injury.

Work hard at the net on your snap and cut shot.  You don't have to be strong to place the ball.

A pwoerfull approach and a good jump will insure a quality swing.

Tai,

Work on your shoulders, triceps and forearms (always work on your abs also).

Military Press and Snatches/Clean and Jerk are also good for shoulders as well as arms.

Do tricep extentions (for more power) and forearm curls (for a more powerful snap) to strenthen your arms.

Once again.......the more on top of the ball you are the harder you will hit.

Good luck with your training.

Tai,

I'll help you as much as possible here.  First....you don't need to work much on your biceps.  As far as water work goes, we use tht at Fordham University but it don't think it is any more effective than working on land....it is just different and it makes practice and working out more enjoyable when you do different things.

You should work out all at once.  Do your arms and legs on Monday, Wed and Fri. And your torso Tue, Thur. and Sat.  Set aside an hour or so and do your whole bady THEN go out and play ball.

For someone live you I would do 3 sets of 8-10 reps.  It will make you stronger and cut you up a little but.  If you were a football player I would tell you to do heavier weight and 2-3 reps.  You don't want to get too big.  Remember to keep on working on agility and flexability.

Good luck

Tai,

I don't know what the core is.  What else is it called.

Answer
Tai,

For abs do sit ups, crunches and exercises with a medicine ball (twists and stretches).  You can also do leg lifts and bicycling on your back.  Abs are very important for every sport because it is the center of your body, so make sure you work them.  Your chest doesn't help spiking much BUT when you play beach it makes the girls stare at you.

God luck.
Steve
