Re-direct ing an overpass with wrist action

Question
Tom - I play 6 on 6 womens. When going up for a block on an overpass is it legal to "redirect" the ball to the left or right by turning your hands as opposed to straight off the block? The action I am referring to is the same as if you and an opponent were both going up for the ball and you "wipe" the ball off the opponents hand. The ball does not rest in your hand and it is not thrown, simply redirected. The official at our game called it a carry and I disagree. Can you weigh in?

Answer
Good evening Beth!

Welcome to www.allexperts.com!

If you're are describing what happened accurately, then the ref is wrong.  You've probably seen this type of "block" in high school, college, international, etc. I'm surprised that the referee in your match hadn't seen it countless times.

When I'm coaching, we call what you did a "flush".  We teach it from the early years on up.

I'm looking at the National Federation rule book right now.  (I use it b/c I've coached under it for 18 years, and I've reffed under it for 3).  "A block may involve wrist action provided there is no prolonged contact."  As far as I know, the NCAA and USAV rule books have very similar working.  I would expect the FIVB does also, but I'm sure b/c I've only watched a handful of international matches.

Of course, you can be called for a lift/carry attempting such a play.  This usually occurs when the ball gets behind you, and you have the "carry" the ball to the front of your body before releasing it.  But as long as you contacted the ball in front of you, and released it quickly, it's all good.

Now, for all this typing, haha, how about you visit me at www.coachhouser.com! In only a few days, whatever weeks that haven't been renewed by nine 2009 camps hosts will be available to new hosts on a first-come, first served basis.

Have a great Thanksgiving!
