Coach asking daughter to change positions too often?

Question
my daughter is 5'2, played club ball and her coach had her playing DS.  On her middle school team, she played just about everything and was MVP and leading point scorer of an undefeated season.  Her JV coach is the same as her club coach and had her setting all summer long.  Now a transfer student has joined the team and she has now taken her off setting and practicing libero.  Is it good for her to keep having her position changed?  What do you make of all this?

Thank you

Answer
Good evening and welcome to www.allexperts.com!

Your coach sounds normal.  She is doing what she thinks is best for the team.

a) Coaches change lineups.

My stepdaughter goes to a D1 university.  The girl who was the setter last season lost her starting spot to a freshman.  It happens.

b) Coaches change lineups to try to get the best group of players out there.

I would do the same thing.  At Junior Nationals in July, I used every lineup I could to try to help my team win.  And when we had a chance to win, we did!  The parents didn't like it, but the players understood, and they just stood there while a few parents melted down.  It was so sad.  And embarrassing.

c) Players must adjust.

If your daughter's coach is starting a new setter, that Coach believes she is better.  You daughter's coach has two choices:  Ask your daughter learn a new position, or sit her on the bench as the 2nd setter.  I would encourage your daughter to hope that her coach makes the 1st choice!  haha

And no, don't be concerned about her changing positions.  Your daughter's ATTITUDE IS THE KEY! If she accepts the coach's decision, if she works hard, then she can help her team!

By the way, last year's setter on my stepd's team?  She's now a DS!  And she's OK with it.  I'm sure she'd rather play half the time, than not at all.
