Libero: How can I be the libero on my school team next year?

Question
I'm a sophomore and play for my high school volleyball team. Though I'm not the best player on the team, I would love to be libero next year because our libero is graduating. Tryouts are in August but I know I need to start training now. So my question is what are some drills I could do at home by myself to help me prepare?

Answer
Good evening and welcome to allexperts.com!

If you want to be the libero at your school, you have to out-pass and out-dig the other girls on your team.  Now, if I were to ask you "What will help you accomplish this," what would you say?  I think you'd say, "I need to play a lot!"  CORRECT!

a) First, however, go to as many summer camp as you can.  Go to some very good ones, so that you can get some tips from the best coaches around.

b) Then play, play, play.  And each time you play, give it your best!  Play indoor 6's, play outdoor doubles, etc.  When you play indoors, see if your team will allow you to play libero.

c) Condition!  Work on your leg strength (for all the squatting you'll have to do) and your arm strength (for all the hand digs you'll have to make).  Also, get after your cardio conditioning.  Biking, running, swimming, etc.  Heck, I just did 30 miles today!  If I can do it, so can you!  But, if you run or bike or swim, push yourself.  Don't just do it to "put in your time".  But have a goal (bike 30 miles in less than 2 hours or run 5 miles in less than 35 minutes), then go for it.  Next time, beat it.  Next time, try to beat it again.

I hope you will contact me again whenever you have a question.  And please visit www.coachhouser.com, and enjoy the smiling faces!
