vintage flyrod

Question

vintage flyurod
Hello, I have a 1940's rod that has an extra tip and an extra tip that is darker in color. The name on it is Se Damasku. On the bottom of the handle where the reel goes it has a stamp that says SOL. The tip of darker color has the old waxy looking ring inside the eyelets. Very mint condition. I don't even think it has been used. The old man I cleaned out his house gave it to me. He had a cabin in Canada and made all his own flys. He is 94 and said he purchased it back in the 40's. I think the one tip is that old because of the lacquer, but not sure on the rest. There is (6) pieces. One tip don't have any eyelets, while the other tree do. Each section measures 36" long. Thank you I would like to know what I have and the value if possible.

Answer
Hi Thad,

I have found nothing at all on this rod.  It does appear to be in good shape and well made and from the 1940s.  It may be a custom made rod from that era or a rod made for the Canadian market that Is simply not listed in my reference books.  I have not heard this name before.

The four pieces that make up the original rod would likely be worth somewhere in the $200-$350 range depending on actual condition.   The extra pieces would be useful to someone who needs them to complete or repair a rod.  You can keep them or sell them as you wish.  Value on these would be what someone who needs them would be willing to pay...probably in the $10-$30 range depending on actual condition.

I assume the waxy ring you refer to is an agate lined guide.  These guides may be easier to sell than the tip. They are needed by rod builders to repair or restore old rods.

I will keep this name and data handy and if I run into anything on the rod maker, I'll let you know.

Thanks,  Joe
