11ft, 3 piece, Edgar Sealey, Split Cane, Float Deluxe rod

Question
Hi I have just been given the above rod, the gentlemen who gave it to me said he bought it in 1953 from hardys of London and was second hand then the salesmen told him.It measures 11ft 1" and all the connections are brass not steel as in other photos i have seen of the rod. Can you tell me when they started making this rod and i only think its the 11ft, 3 piece, Edgar Sealey, Split Cane, Float Deluxe rod i think they did another float rod also The Rod is hexagonal and the words octopus on the rod and on the case which is in pristine condition as is the rod. Just really like to date it if possible going on the dates this gentlemen gave me

Kind Regards
Michael

Answer
Hi Michael,

Some one in the UK would probably be better than me to set the value on this rod.

My reference book does list Sealey and a couple of the Octopus models.  It indicates these rods date from around 1960 or so.  Since your friend bought the rod in 1953 and it was used at that time, then obviously the "or so" is quite a bit earlier.

The brass ferrules would indicate to me a rod much earlier in the 1900s.

My reference book also lists a value around $150 in excellent condition, but I am unsure of how accurate this estimate might be.  I have seen Sealey rods for sale on the online auctions in the 90 to 100 english pound range.

Hope this helps.

Joe
