old shakespeare fly rod

Question
I have an old nine foot, 3 piece, 2 tip Shakespeare Silver Creek rod, Model 1360, in fairly good condition.  Original tube, no sock.  Cork is worn but usable.

Is it advisable to actually fish with it?  Also, how do I determine the weight line to use?  It seems to have a very soft action, supple rather than crisp.  I'd love to see how it loads and handles.

I appreciate your counsel.

Answer
Hi Scott,

This rod in Good condition would be valued in the $80-$100 range.

It should be fine to fish with the rod as long as there are no cracks or splits in the bamboo.  The action will be what we tend to call slow these days.  It will probably take a 7WT line.  If you have access to multiple fly lines, try a 6Wt and an 8WT as well to see which one works best.

Thanks,  Joe
