Orvis Battenkill Impregnated Fly Rod

Question

Orvis Battenkill Impre
Hello,
I have an Orvis Battenkill Impregnated Fly Rod.
It is 8'-6" 2 piece with and extra tip(3 piece total).
The number on all 3 pieces is 21162
I have the original tube and sock.
The green, white and black label on the tube is a bit worn and hard to read in spots.
Line test tells me HCH (on the tube label).
I can't quit read what the size and weight the rod is?
Can you please also tell me when the rod was made and what it may be worth. It is missing one eye at the top of the butt 1/2. All other eyes and ferrules are in fine shape as is the reel seat. The tips are both original and all 3 pieces are the same length.
I looked on your database for this rod but could not find it by the rod number (21162).
Thank you very much for any help you might be !!
Jim Mc.

Answer
James,
I agree the serial number is not in http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2h7gi/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/orvis.htm
I have seen several numbers not in the database.
Neither is it in Sinclair (Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook)

Price book: Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.

Homel gives the following Battenkill rods , with  an extra tip, 2 sections a value for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Battenkill fly rod 8' (2/2) c.1980    125   275   450
Battenkill fly rod 8 1/2' (2/2) #9    95   200   395

Most Battenkills are 70s rods, but they start in 48 and continue.  Impregnation was invented by Jordon in 1946. HCH  says 50s to me , it's the line weight used before AFTMA was established in 1960.

I suggest you post it on "Name that rod" :
http://vfish.net/namethatrod.htm
or search for  it there.

Too bad Orvis doesn't do more but they do recommend 2 dealers at:
http://www.orvis.com/intro.aspx?dir_id=758&subject=2876

Maybe the Orvis story book would help ?

Luck,
Mac
