corroded Penn reel

Question
My Penn reel has green corrosion on the chrome parts. How do I get it off?

Answer
Hi Juan,

I am probably not the best person to answer this one.  However, I have had some luck in the past with the metal polish Brasso.  There are other paste polishes for metal that might work as well.  You can also use "0000" steel wool or the new 3M Synthetic Steel Wool in "0000" size.

You want to be careful using either steel wool to assure you use enough pressure to polish the surfaces, but not too much and scratch them.

Once you remove the corrosion, a thin coating of light weight oil will help keep it from returning.

I should also add that it is not always possible to remove every bit of corrosion from reels and reel seats.  I try to get everything I can, but sometimes have to live with almost everything.

Thanks, Joe
