Horrocks-Ibbotson The Ranger Fly Rod: History & Value

Question
What can you tell me about a Horrocks Ibbotson Co. 9 ft. bamboo fly rod labeled The Ranger.  It's a 3 piece, cork handle with all eyes intact, some corrosion but needs new reel seat top ring.  Even the cork is probably an 8 of 10.  I would rate this antique as an 8 of 10 overall.

I believe it was paired with a Pflueger No. 1554 Sal-Trout Fly Reel if that helps date it or place its use.

Thanks for any advice.

Answer
Hi Dennis,

Well, I have two different sources for H-I rods and neither one of them lists a model called The Ranger.  This does not mean anything except the model is not listed in my sources as neither of them is a complete listing of every H-I rod made. H-I made a lot of rods.

I can tell you that a typical H-I fly rod in the condition you describe would probably be valued in the $40-$65 range.  The rod should probably have two tips to be complete; although H-I did make a few rods with only one tip.  If you have the original rod bag and/or tube, that helps the value.  The fix for the reel seat would be to replace it with a new one; or an old orginal if you can find one.  The cork is likely OK unless there are pieces missing.

The Pflueger Sal-Trout model #1554 would be valued in Good condition at $12-$15, and in Excellent condition at $20-$25 and it was made in the 1955-1970 time frame.

Sorry, I didn't have more information.  Hope this helps.  Joe
