identification of rod

Question
Has anyone heard of a custom bamboo rod maker from Fullerton, California, I believe it says P. H. Kerridge?  The only other information on the rod is patent #1932986.  It is an 8-1/2', 4-5/8 oz, 2 piece rod.

Answer
Hi Greg,

Patent # 1932986 was issued to the very famous rod builder E. C. Powell for his invention of the so-called hollow (or fluted or scalloped) bamboo rod.  The patent number appears on the shaft of many E. C. Powell rods.

My guess is that P.H. Kerridge is the original owner of the rod and his address is in Fullerton, CA.  The rod is quite likely a Powell rod, built in Marysville, CA, and may be quite valuable depending on condition and whether or not you have all the rod sections, original bag and original tube.

I suggest you pursue this one as a Powell rod and take it to a reputable and well established dealer in antiques who has the expertise to verify the rod origin and estimate its value.  Another option might be locate an expert on Powell rods or a museum dealing in vintage fishing gear.  When you locate the appropriate expert, he or she will need to physically inspect the rod, bag and tube.

The shorter versions of Powell rods (of which this is probably one) are more rare than the longer rods.  However, any excellent to mint condition Powell rod is a rare find.

Do some checking on your own into this one.  You may have a very rare find.

Thanks,  Joe
