Rod handle turning

Question
Hello Joe,
A high school friend of mine has developed the skill of custom rod building and I would like to make him some rod handles out of wood. I have some experience on the wood lathe, but I haven't aquired the knowledge of how to drill out the center of the handles to make them lighter.  Would you be able to help me out with someone who could and the necessary hardware need to perform such an operation.  Thank you.
Jim-

Answer
Hi Jim,

Due to the length of the bore, it is difficult to keep the drill centered and the bore accurate.  Slow and easy without allowing too much heat to build up seems to be good advice.  I'm no expert with a lathe.  However, you can find excellent help on the discussion board at "www.rodbuilding.org".  Just ask your questions and a number of the board readers will provide you with answers and advice, including what kind of tools to use (bits, mandrels, etc), where to get them and how to be successful at it.  It is an excellent resource for rod builders and those who craft custom supplies for rod builders.  These are all generous and helpful people so don't be afraid to ask.  You'll enjoy meeting the people and learning new things the "right" way.

Thanks,  Joe
