Answer
Hi Mark,
I just took my girlfriend fishing, and she hadn't been for 30 years.  She did very well on bluegills using a Ratso (ice jig by Custom Jigs) with a Berkley Crappie Nibble, fished under a float (bobber).

You want to use as sensitive of float as possible, and weight it so that the very top portion is above the water.  This way there is less resistance, and the slightest bite can be detected.

Also, allowing the float to bounce along on any waves will put a natural jigging action to the small jig.

I use small ice fishing jigs like the Ratso and Rat Finkie, plus very small tubes.  These are usually tipped with white, pink or chartreuse Crappie Nibbles.

For floats you might want to consider the Mick Thill brand.  Mick is an expert, and World Champion on catching panfish.  He has a website as well at www.mickthill.com.

Hope this has helped.

If you have any further questions on this or other fishing subjects please get in touch.

Best of fishing,
Dan
