Question
Hi I'm Cristiano and I'm 13 years old.  I'm doing a science fair project on bass fishing in Ontario.  I really enjoy fishing and would like to teach others about fishing.  I would appreciate your help by answering some questions.  I would like to thank you in advance for your help.

1.   What is your favourite fishing spot for bass in Ontario?

2.   What type of bass do you prefer to fish for?

3.   What is your favourite type of lure for catching bass?

4.   What is your favourite lure brand in general and for bass fishing?

5.   What type of  fishing rod do you prefer to use for bass fishing?

6.   Do you have a favourite brand for fishing rods?

7.   Should we eat the bass that can be caught in Ontario? Explain.

8.   Do you have a favourite fish recipe?

9.   Are you concerned about the impact of environmental changes on fish and fishing?

10.   What advice would you give to kids that want to learn how to fish, and beginners in general?

11.   How do you think fishing affects wildlife and the environment? Good / Bad / Does not affect; Explain.

12.   What information would you like to share that you believe would be important  in a project about fishing and specifically about bass fishing in Ontario.

Answer
Christiano,
Sorry for the delay.  There was a problem with the site.  I will answer your questions in the order you asked.

1.  Regretfully, I have never fished in Ontario.  I am sorry for not being able to answer this question.

2.  I primarily fish for smallmouth and largemouth.  It would be very difficult to choose between the two. However, a two pound smallmouth from a creek or small river will fight as hard(or harder) as a five pound largemouth from a pond or lake - and the fight is the fun part!

3.  Soft plastic tubes.  They are, in my opinion, the most versatile lure for any type of bass.

4.  I don't really have a favorite; however, Berkley and Stanley make excellent soft plastics and jigs.

5.  I do a lot of finesse fishing(using small, light lures). Therefore, I primarily use a medium action rod for ponds and lakes.  I also use ultra light rods for small creeks, light rods for large creeks, and medium light rods for small rivers.  I usually match any of these rods with a spinning reel.

6.  Fenwick rods and Okuma or Shimano reels.

7.  I am not very familiar with Ontario or the fishing pressure that it undergoes.  Therefore, I will only say that, personally, I never keep bass.  I have been fishing my
entire life and have never eaten a single bass nor have I mounted any of the trophy bass that I have caught.  However, if bass are over populated, they should be managed in some way.  Eating the fish that you catch is the best way to do that.  On the contrary, if bass populations are low, they should be allowed to reach adequate numbers before being removed again.

8.

9.  Every fisherman should be concerned with that issue.  I believe that all true fisherman are conservationists.  We should take care of the environment before the sport of fishing is lost forever.

10.  Take your time and be very patient.  Bass fishing especially can be very frustrating.  One day can bring you numbers of fish while another day brings you nothing at all.  Take the time to learn as much as you can about the fish your after.  Magazines, TV shows, and even websites offer an abundance of information on fishing.

11.  It is not necessarily fishing that affects the environment.  It is more so the individual fisherman.  People leave lead sinkers and used fishing line laying all over.  They discard garbage of all kinds and even leave fish laying dead that they have caught.  It is these
people that impact the environment in a negative way.  As long as we do our part to protect the environment that brings us so much joy, it will continue to bring us joy.  If we do not, we lose everything.

12.  I hate to take the easy way out of this question.  However, I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for here, and I have never fished the Ontario area.  But, I think you will find this wesite to be very helpful for general bass fishing information:  http://www.bassresource.com/fish/bass_fish.html

If you need any further assistance, please feel free to ask again.  Once again, I am VERY sorry for the extreme delay.

Sincerely,
Chris Carter
