fishing kayaks

Question
I am considering obtaining a kayak for fishing in the bays behind the barrier islands along the Texas coast.  I am 60 years old and weigh right at 300 lbs.  I have a modicrum of kayak experience and own a Perception rec. kayak (America 13.5)I used on rivers and lakes in Oklahoma.  Since I am older and heavy, I am concerned that if I get swamped or turn over in the middle of a bay, I feel that I cannot get back into my Perception and paddle it 5 miles full of water or empty it.   I have therefore thought a sit-on-top might be better for me.  Considering my circumstances, what kayak would you recommend

Answer
Sorry, but I don't have much experience with sit-on-tops. But what I do know about them is that most ocean kayak-fishermen use them and handle much larger fish that I could ever take on in my sit in. My opinion is that you definitely need to consider a sit-on-top. The self bailing feature of them seems to be one of your requirements. Another suggestion; Paddle and dump as many times as you can before you really "get out there". The experience gained from practicing self rescues will save your life. Try to have as much simulated gear with you when practicing self rescues to make the situation more real. Getting some one to paddle with you is a good idea too.
