wright & mcgill flyrod 1938 granger victory

Question
ly rod
ly rod
I have my grandfathers 9 foot 3 piece bamboo fly rod. Exellent condition original bag and tube and an extra end piece. Just curious of its value.

Answer
Josh,
I can't see details of your rod but it appears that the bottom of a very worn cork handle is chipped.
Condition is one of the least understood concepts when it comes to bamboo rods. Almost all who write me here at allexperts, tell me their rods are in excellent  or mint condition, very few are correct.

How do you know it is 1938? Wright & McGill purchased Goodwin Grangers rod shop in 1946 and continued thru the 1960s, right here in my home town of Denver, Colorado. That has  to be the time frame if your rod has Wright & McGill on the rod itself -not bags or tubes. It's possible but not likely to be 1938.

Here are some books I own and use to research and verify the information:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000# add about 30% for age of book
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair
Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell
Colorado Classic Cane: A History of the Colorado Bamboo Rod Makers by Dick Spurr and Michael Sinclair

Homel gives the 9 model Wright & McGill, Granger Victory with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of  $70, 165 and $285 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

In 1951 the direction of the lettering was reversed so it read toward the grip.

And are all the sections even in length? -if you want send me detailed not burry pictures of the ferrules (connectors) ,reel seat ,handle and full  rod showing all ends to [email protected] and I can tell you why I say it is a certain condition.
Luck,
Mac
