Betts Tonkin Cane Rod #246 - Assessment & Refinishing Advice
Question
My grandfather had and used this rod and now I have it. It needs some work and I would like some information regarding the rod before anything is done to it. My plan it to have it refinished and use it. The eyelets and wrappings look fine to me. Thank you for hour help.

Answer
Tom,
your ok to refinish it...but you want to determine if the bamboo is still good. Often if the varnish has broken down the bamboo gets dry and brittle. You can strip the old varnish with denatured alcohol. But usually all the eyelets are removed to completely refinish the rod.
